Review: VSL#3®, Probiotic Meal Food

By | September 8, 2016

VSL#3®, the world’s leader in probiotic meal food is now completely dairy and lactose-free.

What is VSL#3?

VSL#3 is a high-potency probiotic medical food is designated for the dietary management of ulcerative colitis, an ileal pouch, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

What makes VSL#3 unique?

“VSL#3 is different from other probiotic products because it has the highest available concentration of beneficial bacteria (450 billion per sachet). Most commonly used probiotic preparations only have one to ten billion bacteria. VSL#3 is a blend of eight different bacteria, whereas many other probiotics use a single strain of bacteria.”

Health Benefits:

  • VSL#3 is 10 times more potent than the average probiotic medical food.
  • VSL#3’s unique synergistic composition, with 8 diverse strains of bacteria, has significant advantages in terms of metabolic and functional activities.

  • VSL#3 “friendly bacteria” to maintain a healthy digestive tract (stomach and intestines). It may also help maintain healthy bacteria in the vagina.
  • VSL#3 used in people with irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, or an ileal pouch.
  • VSL#3 is also used in women to support vaginal health.

Dietary Benefits:

VSL#3 is :

  • Dairy Free
  • Lactose Free
  • Non-GMO
  • Halaal
  • Kosher
  • Gluten Free (according to EU allergen labelling regulations)

VSL#3 also does not contain the following:

  • Crustacean shellfish

  • Tree nuts
  • Soybeans,
  • Celery

  • Lupin
  •  Sulphur dioxide at levels above 10mg/kg, or 10 mg/litre, expressed as SO2

How does VSL#3® help people that suffer from ulcerative colitis, ileal pouch and IBS?

I personally am lactose intolerant and suffer from IBS.  If you have IBS, you might be familiar with the abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, wind, lack of productivity and fatigue. VSL#3 alleviates these symptoms over a period of time, I saw a difference within a week. If has been three weeks since using this VSL#3 and I have experienced less abdominal pain, less bloating and constipation, and I have become more productive and energised at work.

How does VSL#3 work?

The unique blend of beneficial bacteria in VSL#3 works by colonising the gastrointestinal tract with ‘good’ bacteria. This helps maintain a favourable balance of bacteria in the gut, and keep ‘bad’ bacteria at bay.

How long does VSL#3 take to become established in the gut?

It is recommended to take VSL#3 for at least one month to see the best benefit. In general, it takes up to seven days of taking VSL#3 for the bacteria colonies to become established in the gut. By day 20 the maximum concentration of bacteria will have colonised the gut, this level remains stable while you continue to use VSL# and up to three weeks after discontinuing it.

The only probiotic I’ve taken is those cultured drinks (which I think is more suitable for kids). You mentioned a higher concentration of bacteria in VSL3. I heard that having too much pro-biotic will cause a loose bowel. Is there any truth to this?

This is very informative post about VSL#3, love the clear information and it has everything I am looking for. However, this does seem a little pricey, are there any cheaper alternatives available?

Hi, well if you are not someone who suffers from IBS, ileal pouch or ulcerative colitis I highly suggest you take a probiotic will a less strain as this would be less expensive.

Hi, it actually assists individuals that suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) like ulcerative colitis. It helps to alleviate symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea , abdominal pain, constipation, and other symptoms. VSL#3 now dairy free, can greatly help individuals that are lactose intolerant and at the same time suffering from IBS or IBD.

    Thank you,

This is a great find. I am going to send this to my father in law who is lactose intolerant and has many symptoms of IBS. He used to love to eat cheese especially and steak but for the last couple years he has gone pretty much vegan because a lot of that hurts his stomach now. I’m sure he would see some benefit if he tried the VSL3 capsules. Thanks for the info!

I am quite interested in leading a more healthier lifestyle. This product looks like it could help me. I do not suffer from the ailments that you mentioned in this post. So with that said is this product suitable for me? I would be very much interested to know.

Hi, given the cost of the product and the actual design of the product, I would not recommend this product to someone that is not suffering from IBS or ulcerative colitis.

    That’s an interesting product.
I am curious. Do you have to change your diet when you use this product? Or will this product help you even if you eat sugar and wheat and other unhealthy foods?
Have you yourself done other changes in your life other then started taking this product?

    1. Uwais Post author

Hi, no need to change your diet if you are using this product. That what makes this product amazing. I have been certain changes to my diet as I am suffering from IBS and this product has become dairy/lactose-free very recently. IBS diets differ per individual and my changes include avoiding fizzy drinks and avoiding oily foods to mention a few.

Good thing I’m regular. But I realized not everyone is that fortunate. This is a great product for seniors.

A very interesting and informative review article. As an IBS sufferer I am always on the lookout for good natural health products which can help to alleviate my symptoms. I already take probiotic tablets which help to restore good bacteria to my gut but sometimes you need to try several alternatives to see which works best for you. Will keep this brand of probiotics in mind for possible future use

    1. Uwais Post author

Hi, this product will change your life , trust me! If your current probiotic gives you trouble, just remember VSL#3.

  10. Mohammad Makki

Gee, I’m glad I found your review! I sometimes go though IBS, and having a supplement like this could really prevent the problem. It’s really something that everyone can use. I hope it works wonders. How has it helped you so far? I hope it’s worth the price!

    1. Uwais Post author

Hi, VSL#3 has been a great help to me. It has helped me regain my life. Now I am energized and productive. I do not suffer from abdominal pain, no constipation, no diarrhea, do not feel so heavy, not so tired anymore. This product has been life changing.

Hey, I use Probiotics on a regular basis. I’ve tried many different kinds. So far the one that works best for me is drinking a glass of GoodBelly in the evenings. The kids will drink it too, which makes it easier to get them regular. Both me and my daughter have issues.

This is very helpful information. I may actually give these a try.

  12. Dinh

I try to take probiotics but have ran out and have not recently purchased any.
The price is expensive but if it alleviates the symptoms of IBS then it’s worth it. Do you have to continuously take it for it to be effective?

This is a great find. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Uwais Post author

It depends per individual if they need to take it continuously, depends on the type of diet one wants to follow.

  13. Furkan

It is good that it does not include peanuts even small size of digestion makes tolerant people very bad and wow 450 billion per sachet is really a lot. when do you suggest to take it during the day?

  14. Jana Perkins

I am lactose intolerant and have been all my life. I have to drink lactaid milk because real milk makes me get stomach cramps. I don’t know if I have IBS because I don’t know the symptoms and never been diagnosed with it. I got my lactose intolerance from my mom so I guess mine is genetic. I was so allergic to milk when I was a child that I would vomit if I drank milk until I turned five. After that it turned into lactose intolerance that was no where near as severe.

    1. Uwais Post author

Hi, VSL#3 could actually help you with the pain, a definite try to see if it makes a huge difference to your life.

  15. Reelika

Hey! Great review! Really good to know about these things. I was just wondering is this something you will be taking on a regular basis, every day? or is this meant to take only a certain period of time?

    1. Uwais Post author

It all depends on the diet as diet plays an important role in consuming these supplements.
